Former Vice President Joe Biden wins Texas, while Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, a self-described Democratic Socialist and independent, leads in early results in delegate-rich California in Super Tuesday Democratic primaries, according to projections by news organizations.
California with 415 delegates, and Texas, 228 delegates, were states with the top two delegate counts in Tuesday’s primaries.
Biden also won in Alabama, Arkansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Virginia, according to projections.
Sanders also won in Colorado, Utah and Vermont, according to projections. Congressman Ro Khanna of California and state Assemblyman Ash Kalra have supported the Vermont senator.
On Super Tuesday, more than 1,300 delegates nearly a third of the total delegates available in the primary season, were up for grabs. To secure the Democratic Party nomination, at least 1991 delegates are needed on the first ballot.
Amar Shergill, chair of the California Democratic Party’s Progressive Caucus, says Sanders can wind the presidency in the November election.
“Once again, Senator Sanders has proven he has the coalition to win,” Sherill said.. More votes, more delegates, more volunteers, and more contributors than any other campaign. He is the
only candidate with the grassroots energy that can defeat Trump.”
Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who is hoping to pass the viability test necessary to be on stage in the next Democratic debate, won the territory of American Samoa’s caucus, according to projections, and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii won a single delegate there but had not won a state primary.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts had not achieved a victory on Super Tuesday, according to projections.
Warren was projected to have won 13 delegates yesterday. Bloomberg captured 11 delegates, and Gabbard 1, according to projections.
Ajaib Gill, a delegate at California’s Democratic Party convention, said he doesn’t support Biden.
“While I respect Joe Biden’s long record of service, I believe he
represents the politics of the past,” Gill said. “He lacks the energy and ideas needed to address the challenges of the 2020s.”.
According to recent published reports, Biden is considering US Sen. Kamala Harris of California, who ended her presidential campaign in December, as a potential vice presidential candidate if he wins the nomination.
