10 common myths about Coronavirus (Covid-19)

The novel coronavirus which is also known as SARS-CoV-2 has now spread to all the continents of the world with the exception of Antarctica. Globally the virus has affected 1 million people and killed around 45000 people. Many are terming it as one of the biggest human disasters and challenges humanity has ever faced in history. 

In the US, the virus has killed more than 5000 people and the experts have estimated that if the virus is not controlled, it can kill over 100,000 people. 

There are several myths about the virus which is widespread over the social media networks. Here are some of the common myths about the coronavirus.

1 – Only old people are affected with the coronavirus

This is a myth as we can see in news reports that the virus has infected people irrespective of age. Though it’s a fact that people with asthma or diabetes are more susceptible to the disease.

2 – Spraying chlorine or alcohol on the skin can kill the coronavirus

This is a myth and this can in fact cause a great bit of harm to skin. Spraying chlorine or alcohol on the skin has no effect on the viruses inside the body.

3- Children will not have COVID-19

That’s an absolute myth. People of any age group can have this disease. Any age group can become infected with this disease.

4- COVID-19 is similar to flu

Though the majority of symptoms like aches, fever, and cough are similar and both can lead to pneumonia but COVID-19 is a more serious disease. Mortality rates are much higher in case of coronavirus..

5- If you have Covid-19 then you are going to die

This is just a myth as the majority of people get cured from the coronavirus infection. Almost 81 percent of the COVID-19 cases are mild in nature and people get cured though there is no sure cure vaccine or drug yet available in the market.

6 – Wearing masks removes the chances of catching Covid-19

This is a myth as the majority of the available masks such as disposable one are not going to protect you from the virus particles entering your mouth and mose. Facmaks much tightly fit the face so that it completely disallows entry of any fine particles in your mouth or nose. Only a high quality and a fully fit mask can protect you against the Covid-19. One thing however is good about wearing a mask is that you are less likely to infect others.

7 – Cats and mouse spread coronavirus –

There is little evidence that the  SARS-CoV-2 can infect cats and dogs. Covid-19 is transmitted through human to human contact and there is little evidence that animals can transmit this disease in humans.

8-  It takes at least 10 minutes to be with an infected person to catch the virus:

It’s true that the longer the duration of the contact, more is the chances of getting the disease. It’s not necessary that one needs at least 10 minutes to catch the disease. It can be transmitted in less than 10 minutes.

9 – Home remedies can protect against the coronavirus:

It’s an absolute myth. No home remedies can protect you from catching coronavirus. Silver colloid, sesame oil, garlic, fish tank cleaner, burning sage etc are good for maintaining health but it is in no way a protection against the coronavirus. Only thing you can do is to wash your hands properly and frequently and avoid meeting people and especially people with symptoms of the virus. 

10: Hand dryers kill coronavirus

It is not true at all, hand dryers cannot kill coronavirus. Only thing which you can and should practice is washing your hands with soap or water. You can also use alcohol-based hand rub.
