Markandey Katju is a former Judge, Supreme Court of India, and former Chairman, Press Council of India. The views expressed are his own.
In the recent Jaipur Literature Festival, Malala Yousafzai, the 23-year-old Pakistani Nobel Prize winner, spoke for good relations between India and Pakistan.
Others like the organization Aman Ki Asha have also advocated the same idea.
However, what is the truth? The truth is that though most people in both India and Pakistan are good, and want friendly relations, there are powerful forces that will continue to promote hostility and hatred. If there is genuine friendship, then the very purpose of creating Pakistan as a theocratic state will disappear. See these articles:

India’s aim must be to transform itself into a modern, highly industrialized country like USA, European countries, Japan, China etc, otherwise Indians can never escape from massive poverty, record unemployment, appalling level of child malnourishment, almost total lack of proper healthcare and good education for the masses, etc. ( See in this connection my articles ‘ India has to choose between the path of progress and dismemberment ‘, ‘ India needs a modern-minded revolution to become a first-world nation ‘ published in theweek.in, and ‘ Our Real Enemies are Abroad ‘ published in outlookindia.com ).
The whole game, and unwritten secret rule, of the developed nations, is that India, which is already the most developed of the underdeveloped countries, must not be allowed to become a fully developed nation, because if it does, then with its cheap labor it will undersell the goods of the developed countries, resulting in massive closure of industries of the developed countries, with consequential huge unemployment.
So how do the developed countries prevent that? They do it by making Indians fight with each other on caste, religious, lingual, ethnic and regional basis, using their local agents like our political parties. They also do it by promoting hostility and hatred between India and Pakistan.
In fact, Partition in 1947, and the creation of Pakistan as an Islamic state, was done so that Hindus and Muslims keep fighting each other, and India does not emerge as a modern industrial giant ( of which it has all the potential ), like another China. Also, India must be kept as a big purchaser of foreign arms ( see my article –
Recently a ceasefire agreement has been announced with great hoopla and fanfare.
I submit this will not last long ( for the reasons given above ). Prime Minister Vajpayee’s Lahore bus trip was soon followed by the Kargil war. So whenever there is a step towards good relations, a setback invariably occurs ( or rather, is made to occur ).
So I repeat, Malala, Aman Ki Asha, and other goody-goody well-intentioned folks like them, are living in a fool’s paradise.
