AR Rahman backs Kamala Harris with exclusive performance to energize South Asian voter support

iNDICA NEWS BUREAU-

Oscar-winning Indian music composer AR Rahman has recorded a 30-minute performance video in support of Democratic Presidential candidate and current U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris. The performance, supported by AAPI Victory Fund, is expected to bolster Harris’ presidential campaign ahead of the polls. Americans will cast their vote on November 5 to choose the next president.

The 57-year-old musician, who is no stranger to Hollywood, having worked in the Academy Award-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire, is the first major international artiste from South Asia to have endorsed Harris. The current U.S. Vice President is of mixed Indian and African parentage.

Talking about the Rahman’s performance, Shekar Narasimhan, chairman of the AAPI Victory Fund, said: “With this performance, AR Rahman has added his voice to a chorus of leaders and artistes who are standing up for progress and representation in America.”

“This is more than just a musical event; it’s a call to action for our communities to engage and vote for the future we want to see,” he said.

Rahman’s endorsement underscored the vital role of AAPI voters in this election and the growing momentum behind the Harris-Walz ticket, said the AAPI Victory Fund.

The exclusive performance was aired on October 13 at 8 pm ET on AAPI Victory Fund’s YouTube channel as part of a strategic push to galvanise support for Harris within the South Asian community.

Speaking to Indiaspora founder MR Rangaswami ahead of the performance, Rahman said, “It’s such an inspiring thing to see one of us going and leading. It’ll be nice to have a first female president with a lot of energy, love and support coming from all of us.”

“Kamala Harris’ vision for a more equitable world is an inspiration for us all. Her interest on focusing on what unites us, instead of what divides us, is a message that’s very important not just for the Unites States, but for the world. As a fellow South Asian, Tamil person, I’m deeply proud of her commitment to making the world a better place. I look forward to having the first female president.” Rahman said.
