Bollywood choreographer makes animated detective Mira dance to Indian tunes

indica News Bureau-

Indian American choreographer, Nakul Dev Mahajan, noted for choreographing Michelle Obama’s Bollywood dance workshop during the Diwali celebration on November 5, 2013, is now choreographing detective ‘Mira’, the protagonist of an upcoming animates series by Disney ‘Mira, Royal Detective’ who is the detective to the royal family of the fictitious kingdom of Jalpur.

The series is set to premiere on March 20 on Disney Junior channel. Unlike other series and princesses who enchant the audience with their ballroom dancing and ballet, this detective will dance to the tunes of Indian dances like Kathak, Bhangra and freestyle Bollywood dance, choreographed by Mahajan, one of the best known Bollywood choreographers in the US.

Born in Agra, Mahajan moved to US with his parents in childhood and has made contributions to dance shows like “So You Think You Can Dance” and A R Rahman’s “Jai Ho” world tour. Of late, Mahajan also helped Indian American Nina Davuluri with the Miss America contest’s talent segment – she eventually won the title.

Describing his experience as ‘ touching and personal’ he said that he feels that the animated character ‘Mira’ is his daughter and he ought to give her the best he has.

“I choreograph the dance sequences in my studio and sent videos of me dancing to the (Disney animation) team. They send me back the ‘animatics’ and I give them my feedback and they further work upon it. It is quite spectacular what they do”, he told a media channel.
