Six Indians along with 12 others died and 23 were injured when a bus carrying foreign migrants and locals plunged into a 50-meter-deep ravine in Nayarit state in northwestern Mexico. The fatalities included three children. The bus driver has been detained on suspicion of speeding.
The civil protection agency in Nayarit state reported that the accident occurred when the driver lost control due to speeding and plunged the bus down an embankment near the state capital Tepic on August 3.
An official of the Nayarit’s firefighting service said six Indian citizens had been aboard the bus, part of the Elite passenger line, which departed from Mexico City on Wednesday, August 2, the Daily Mail reported. The bus’s destination was Tijuana, the border town across from southern California.
An official list with the names of survivors published by Mexican newspaper El Financiero identified four of the India nationals as Rajan Singh, 21; Mandip Kumar, 22; Adama Kane, 46; and Hanidou Kane, the British daily reported.
The driver, identified as Francisco, survived the crash and was taken into custody as part of the investigation. He told investigators that he fell asleep behind the wheel and eventually lost control of the vehicle before it crashed through a guardrail.
Jorge Rodríguez, the security and civil protection secretary for the state of Nayarit, told reporters that the rescue mission was “extremely difficult” because of how deep the ravine was, the Mail reported.
In February, migrants from Venezuela, Colombia, and Central America were involved in a bus crash. The accident which left 17 dead took place between the southern state of Oaxaca and central Puebla. In July, at least 29 people were killed when a passenger bus careened off a mountain road and fell into a ravine in Oaxaca. In December 2021, a trailer carrying 160 migrants crashed into a pedestrian bridge on a highway in the southern state of Chiapas, leaving 56 dead, mostly Guatemalans.
