California Governor names two Indian-origin attorneys as superior court judges

Two Indian-origin are among 27 new superior court judge appointees announced by California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Sweena Pannu, a Democrat, who will serve as a Judge in the Stanislaus County Superior Court, fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Thomas D. Zeff.

Marsha Bipin Amin, of San Diego County, has been appointed to serve as a Judge in the San Diego County Superior Court. She fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Laura Halgren.

The compensation for each of these 27 positions is $231,174, according to a press release from the Governor’s office.

Pannu has served as a Deputy County Counsel in the Stanislaus County Counsel’s Office since 2020. From 2006-2020, she served as a Deputy Public Defender at the Stanislaus County Public Defender’s Office. She was an attorney at ML SARIN from 1996 to 2004, and earned a Master of Laws degree from the University of Aberdeen School of Law after graduating from Punjab University.

Amin, a registered Democrat, has served as a Managing Attorney at the Fourth District Court of Appeal since 2018 and was a Senior Appellate Court Attorney there from 2011 to 2018. She was an Associate at Procopio from 2006 to 2010 and served as a Law Clerk at the U.S. District Court, Southern District of California from 2005 to 2006. Amin earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Diego School of Law and a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Southern California.
