Indian American businessman and philanthropist Manoj Bhargava, 71, is under investigation by authorities for tax fraud, reports said.

Bhargava, who used to be a monk, made millions from his 5-Hour Energy brand which sells caffeine shots and energy drinks. While he has donated millions to charity, the billionaire has been accused of fraudulently lowering his tax bill by gifting a $624 million stake in his company to a Canadian citizen named Indu Rawat.

Indian-origin historian Shailaja Paik receives USD 800,000 grant from MacArthur Foundation on Dalit studies

Shailaja Paik, a historian of Indian origin, has received an USD 800,000 grant from the MacArthur Foundation for “exploring the intersection of caste, gender, and sexuality in modern India through the lives of Dalit women”. Dalits are members of the lowest class in the traditional Hindu social hierarchy.

Paik was announced as one of the 22 MacArthur Fellows. The fellowship, as per the official website, is a $800,000, no-strings-attached award to extraordinarily talented and creative individuals as an investment in their potential.

Two Indian-Americans named White House Fellows for 2024-2025 class

The White House has appointed two Indian-Americans, Nalini Tata and Padmini Pillai, in the 2024-2025 class of White House Fellows. Founded in 1964, the White House Fellows program offers exceptional young leaders first-hand experience working at the highest levels of the Federal government.

The appointees spend a year working with senior White House Staff, Cabinet Secretaries, and other top-ranking Administration officials, and leave the Administration equipped to serve as better leaders in their communities. Fellowships are awarded on a non-partisan basis.

Indian-origin healthcare expert named CEO of San Ramon Regional Medical Center

The San Ramon Regional Medical Center is set to get its fourth leader since 2022 as Dr. Murali Naidu — current CEO of Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock — will take over as the permanent CEO of SRRMC starting in November.

The announcement was made Tuesday, October 1, that Naidu will take over from interim CEO Beenu Chadha on November 4. Chadha will retain her role as the SRRMC’s CFO.

In a significant breakthrough to help patients battling both HIV and tuberculosis (TB), a study led by an Indian-origin scientist found a cancer therapy that can help control TB and not interfere with combined antiretroviral therapy (cART). cART is a treatment that uses a combination of three or more drugs to treat HIV infection.

While many cases of TB can be controlled with months of antibiotics, the infection can return to people who are immunocompromised as a result of HIV. A resurging TB infection — responsible for more than 1.3 million deaths worldwide — can often be deadly to these individuals.

India’s Praveen Kumar won the gold medal in the Men’s High Jump T64 with 2.08-metre jump, breaking the Asian record during the process at the ongoing Paralympics Games on Friday, September 6. The 21-year-old added a sixth gold to India’s tally to take the overall count to 26, which also includes nine silver and 11 bronze medals.

Indian shot putter Sachin Khilari wins silver in men’s F46 event at Paris Paralympics

India’s Sachin Sarjerao Khilari won the silver medal in the men’s shot put – F46 event with an Asian record of 16.32m, at the State de France on Wednesday, September 4.

Khilari finished behind Canada’s Greg Stewart, who registered a throw of 16.38m, his season’s best. India’s Mohammad Yasser (14.21m) and Rohit Kumar (14.10m) finished eighth and ninth, respectively.
