U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement to sell F-35 stealth fighter jets to India has drawn criticism from Congress MP Tariq Anwar, who argued that the U.S. is primarily focused on securing profitable deals, rather than showing genuine respect for India.
In an interview with IANS, Anwar stated, “The core aim of the United States and India’s relationship is clear: To strike as many deals as possible to maximize profits. As for showing respect or honor to India, we’ve witnessed firsthand how the U.S. government has treated Indian citizens in recent days.”
Anwar also commented on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stance on illegal immigration, particularly regarding Indians living in the U.S.
Modi had stated that India would work to bring back citizens residing illegally in the US, emphasizing that those who enter a country illegally have no right to stay. Anwar responded, “Look, perhaps the Prime Minister is unaware of the importance of human rights. Human rights are a vital part of our global responsibility, yet they seem to be overlooked when it comes to certain policies.”
The Congress leader also addressed U.S. President Trump’s recent approval of the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, a figure involved in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Anwar expressed support for the move, saying, “If such individuals are extradited to India, it will undoubtedly benefit our courts and the judicial process.”
Additionally, Anwar took issue with Trump’s comment that PM Modi is “a much tougher and better negotiator” than him. He questioned the Prime Minister’s negotiation skills, asserting, “A negotiator cannot be so skilled if they fail to protect their own citizens or uphold their dignity. A true negotiator should be able to safeguard their people’s interests.”
PM Modi’s recent visit to the U.S. included high-level talks with President Trump on trade, defense, technology, energy, and security. This marked the first meeting between the two leaders since Trump’s second term began, ushering in a new phase in US-India relations.
