Former Vice President Joe Biden scored a victory in seven state in Democratic primaries on Super Tuesday, and Sen. Bernie Sanders won three states, according to projections from several news organizations.
California (415 delegates) and Texas (228) — the top two delegate counts – were too close to call as votes continued to be counted. In both California and Texas, voting hours have been extended in certain areas because long lines at the polling places.
On Super Tuesday, more than 1,300 delegates nearly a third of the total delegates available in the primary season, were up for grabs. To secure the Democratic Party nomination, 1991 delegates are needed on the first ballot.
Biden won 240 delegates in Alabama, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Virginia, according to projections.
Sanders won 188 delegates in Colorado, Utah and Vermont. Congressman Ro Khanna of California and state Assemblyman Ash Kalra have supported the Vermont senator.
Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg won the American Samoa caucus, according to projections, and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii won a single delegate there, potentially carrying her into the next debate. Gabbard had not won a state primary.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts had not achieved a victory on Super Tuesday, according to projections of early vote counts.
According to recent published reports, Biden is considering US Sen. Kamala Harris of California, who ended her presidential campaign in December, as a potential vice presidential candidate if he wins the nomination.
