An Indian American family from Edison, New Jersey became the toast of social media over the weekend when it installed a life-size statue of Indian acting superstar Amitabh Bachchan outside their residence.
Gopi Sheth and his wife Rikhu Sheth unveiled the statue on Saturday. The family said it spent $75,000 to build and install the likeness. In a video that has now been shared by hundreds of Indian Americans on Twitter, Gopi Sheth said over 600 Indian-origin community members attended the inauguration.
The statue – modelled on a pose that the actor routinely enacts in the hit television show Kaun Bagega Crorepati? (the Hindi version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?) is enclosed in a glass structure outside the Sheth residence in New Jersey.
Sheth, whose family migrated to the US from the western Indian state of Gujarat in 1990 said that he and his family grew up watching Bachchan’s movies in India. “He is a giant of Indian cinema,” Sheth said, “but he is down-to-earth. He is a versatile actor and a great philanthropist. Amit ji who has inspired many people like me to make it big in life deserves to be immortalized. I could not think of other tributes than dedicating a statue to him.”
