The 29 member countries of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) unanimously adopted the GPAI New Delhi Declaration to enable the alliance to shape the future of AI in terms of both innovation and creating collaborative AI between the partner nations. The countries agreed to create applications of AI in healthcare, agriculture, and many other sectors.
GPAI New Delhi Declaration built a consensus among GPAI members on advancing safe, secure, and trustworthy AI and commitment to supporting the sustainability of GPAI projects. The declaration also highlighted concerns like misinformation, unemployment, lack of transparency and fairness, protection of intellectual property and personal data, and threats to human rights and democratic values. It stresses the need to alleviate the risks associated with the use of AI and also promotes equitable access to critical resources for AI innovation.
The GPAI, which includes countries like the United States, India, the UK, France, Japan, and Canada among others, is focused on adopting a global risk-based approach to AI. China is not part of the group. India hosted the GPAI Summit at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from December 12 – 14, 2023. During the three days, 30 sessions were organized which were attended by global AI experts from GPAI, international organizations, representatives of industry, startups, and academia. More than 22,000 persons attended the summit and out of these 15,000+ AI enthusiasts participated in the summit virtually.
“We support the intention of India, as Lead Chair for 2024, in its endeavor to promote collaborative AI for global partnership among GPAI members by supporting projects aimed at promoting equitable access to critical resources for AI research and innovation, such as AI computing, high-quality diverse datasets, algorithms, software, testbeds, and other AI-relevant resources in compliance with applicable intellectual property protections and data protection legislation,” the declaration said.
The declaration announces the countries’ commitment to adhere to the principles for responsible stewardship of trustworthy AI that are rooted in democratic values and human rights and to promote the “trustworthy, responsible, sustainable, and human-centered use of AI.”
The declaration was adopted following a five-hour ministerial deliberation. The declaration seeks to ensure that AI and its benefits are inclusive and available to all the countries of the world, including the Global South, said the Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar.
The declaration asserts that GPAI members will address AI-related issues via applied AI projects aimed at addressing societal problems and global challenges, maximizing the benefits and mitigating associated risks. As a new thematic priority, GPAI members also agreed to support AI innovation in the agriculture sector.
In the GPAI New Delhi declaration, the nations have acknowledged the importance of promoting the development of and access to risk-proportionate trustworthy AI applications for ensuring sustainable food production systems and implementing resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production. By using AI technology, the nations have agreed to help regenerate ecosystems, strengthen capacity for mitigation and adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding, and other disasters, and improve land and soil quality, as well as promote inclusion and empowerment of workers in the agricultural supply chain.
