Keeping up with its practice of helping the society, the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin – Connecticut Chapter (GOPIO-CT) raised funds for Bennett Cancer Center of the Stamford Hospital. GOPIO-CT’s drive consisted of a walkathon on Sunday, June 9, at Stamford’s Mill River Park.
The collected funds help cancer patients and their families during their stay at the Stamford Hospital. The collection is used specifically for patient’s rides to and from treatment, nutrition counseling, acupuncture and other services, for which the Bennett Cancer Center do not charge the patients.
GOPIO-CT, which is a registered 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, was a sponsor of the event along with other corporations and non-profits. Not just the organization, each individual participant in it also raised funds.
The chapter has been participating in the event for the last 14 years. This year, GOPIO-CT donated over $5,000. As per reports,
The program was coordinated by GOPIO-CT Board member Anita Mathur. Launched in March 2006, the Connecticut Chapter aims to present and promote the interest of India and PIOs and help shape relevant policies; promote better understanding of Indian history, culture and customs; mobilize the growing professional and intellectual resources of Indian Americans for economic and social programs beneficial to the community; and build a collective voice for Indian Americans in Connecticut.
