For many Democrats it is “fashionable fashionable to say that America is racist — it’s a lie,” Nikki Haley told the Republican National Convention Monday.
It was seen by many as a direct retort to the Indian American at the center of US politics — Kamala Harris. An Indian American versus Indian American exchange of fire.
Harris, the first Indian-American woman and the first black woman to be the Democratic Party’s candidate for Vice President of the United States, had last week spoken passionately about racism and policing in America.
“America is not a racist country. This is personal for me,” said Haley, 48, the first woman to be governor of South Carolina and the first Indian-American woman governor in the United States.
“I am the proud daughter of Indian immigrants. My parents never gave in to grievance and hate. I was a brown girl in a black and white world.”
“America is a story that is a work in progress,” Haley added.
Haley, former Ambassador to the United Nations who was born Nimrata in a Punjabi immigrant family, delivered a strong speech lauding President Donald Trump and his work.
Lashing at Joe Biden’s campaign plans, she called it a “radical left” future fueled by “anarchy”, “riots” and “cancel culture”.
“We did what Barack Obama and Joe Biden refused to do,” Haley said. “We stood up for America. And we stood against our enemies… Donald Trump has always put America first, whereas as Joe Biden and the Democrats are still blaming America first.”
Pointing to President Obama’s Iran deal, she said, “The former Vice President has a record of weakness and failure. Joe Biden is good for Iran and ISIS, great for communist China, and he’s a godsend to everyone who wants America to apologize, abstain and abandon our values.”
Haley received international attention for taking down the confederate flag from the state capitol last year following a mass shooting at an African-American church in the city of Charleston.
