Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras retained first position in overall ranking as well as in the engineering list, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, topped the university list, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad topped the management category and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) the medical category in the India Rankings 2020, the country’s human resource development (HRD) ministry’s annual assessment of institutes of higher education.
Miranda College, Delhi, retained the first position amongst colleges for the third consecutive year in the fifth edition of the rankings.
Dental medicine institutes were included for the first time this year, with Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, Delhi, securing top position in the category.
India’s HRD minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ virtually released the rankings in 10 categories, based on the institutes’ performance on five broad categories of parameters.
Pokhriyal said that these rankings acts as a guide to students for selection of universities based on a set of criteria and helps universities to improve their performance on various ranking parameters and identify gaps in research and areas of improvement.
He added that the ranking of Institutions at national level instill a competitive spirit amongst institutions to perform better and secure higher rank in international ranking.
The ranking framework evaluates institutions on five broad generic groups of parameters — teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice], graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.
A total of 3771 institutions offered themselves for ranking.
In the overall category, IIT Madras was followed by IISc Bengaluru, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Kharagpur.
In the university list, topper IISc Bengaluru was followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore, and Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
Among engineering schools, IIT Madras was followed by IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur and IIT Kharagpur.
In the management category, IIM Ahmedabad was followed by IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow and IIT Kharagpur.
Among top colleges, Miranda House, Delhi, was followed by three more from India’s capital –
Lady Shri Ram College, Hindu College, and St Stephen`s College – and Presidency College, Chennai.
Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, topped the pharmacy college list.
Among medical schools, topper AIIMS, New Delhi, was followed by Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, and Christian Medical College, Vellore.
IIT Kharagpur was ranked the top architecture school, and National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, was the top law school.
