India has been elected to chair the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee this year. The committee seeks to ensure that the global response to the threat remains “unambiguous, undivided and effective.”
India will be represented on the committee by TS Tirumurti, its permanent representative to the UN.
“As chair for 2022, India will make determined efforts to enhance the role of the CTC in strengthening the multilateral response to counter-terrorism and ensuring that the global response to the threat remains unambiguous, undivided, and effective,” an official statement after its election read.
The CTC was established by Resolution 1373 (2001) of the UN Security Council in September 2001 after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and tasked with monitoring the implementation of the resolution, which requested countries to enforce a number of measures to enhance their legal and institutional ability to counter terrorist activities at home, in their regions, and around the world.
It comprises all 15 members of the Security Council – the five permanent members as well as the elected members.
Since joining the Indian Foreign Service in 1985, Tirumurti has served in numerous capacities, including in India’s embassy in Egypt, at India’s permanent mission to the United Nations in Geneva, as India’s first representative to the Palestinian Authority, as a counselor in the Indian embassy in the US, as deputy chief of mission in the embassy in Indonesia, and as high commissioner for India in Malaysia.
Prior to taking up his current position at the UN in May 2020, he served as secretary in India’s foreign ministry handling the economic relations portfolio.
