An Indian American has been appointed as the new executive director of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC).
Nisha Ramachandran, becomes the first person of South Asian American descent to serve in the role. She a former aide to Democratic leader Ami Bera (D-CA 7th District), assumed the new role on July 22.
She about her new role on the microblogging platform, saying, “This week, I started in my new role as CAPAC Executive Director. I am thrilled to join this awesome team under the leadership of @RepJudyChu and continue working with the AAPI community. Sincere thanks to everyone for all your well wishes and support.”
CAPAC, founded in 1994, is a congressional caucus of members of Congress of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander heritage (AAPI).
“I’m very excited to welcome Nisha Ramachandran as the new Executive Director of CAPAC,” said Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27th District), the caucus chair, in a statement.
“Nisha comes to CAPAC after nearly a decade of experience working with the AAPI community on a national scale. Her breadth of knowledge on the issues important to the community — from civil rights to healthcare — make Nisha the perfect leader to help guide CAPAC in this critical moment as we address the continuing problem of anti-Asian violence and work to rebuild after the coronavirus pandemic in a way that ensures AAPIs are included. I am looking forward to working with Nisha to advance AAPI priorities and am eager to see her succeed,” she added.

Most recently, Nisha Ramachandran managed her own consulting business that focused on AAPI advocacy. She is also a co-founder and board member of ‘Desis for Progress’, a group that supports the voice of South Asian Americans.
