Indian American Aruna Miller could be next Lieutenant Governor of Maryland

iNDICA NEWS BUREAU-

Democratic Lieutenant Governor candidate, Aruna Miller, and her running mate, gubernatorial candidate, Wes Moore, have secured their position as Democratic nominee based on the results of Maryland’s primary on Tuesday, July 19.

If elected this November, Miller would be the first woman of color to serve as Maryland’s lieutenant governor, and the first South Asian or AAPI woman to serve as lieutenant governor in the United States.

Miller was named Impact’s second Executive Director in 2019. Under her leadership, she helped Impact set the stage for the organization’s first presidential year.

Miller immigrated to the United States from India when she was 7. Since then, she has served as a public servant for over 25 years, including as a Representative for Maryland’s 15th District in Maryland’s House of Delegates.

Neil Makhija, Executive Director of Indian American Impact, issued this statement: “Indian Americans–nationwide–are thrilled to see Aruna Miller, a fierce longstanding advocate for underserved communities, on the ballot in Maryland this November.”

“Aruna’s historic election to Lieutenant Governor represents a step forward for South Asians not only statewide, but across the country. This momentous nomination serves as inspiration and motivation for Impact’s ongoing work in engaging and elevating a new generation of South Asian leaders all across the country,” he added.

Makhija said that during her time at Impact, Aruna’s dedication to uplifting South Asian voters and candidates lay the foundation for the organization’s future successes in 2020 and beyond.

He said, “Her powerful leadership and advocacy work planted deep roots at our organization that have continued to blossom since her departure, and we are happy to be cheering her on as she advances AAPI issues that are often overlooked in Maryland.”

“We’re completely confident in Aruna’s ability to lead with the same grace and strength with which she once led us. We look forward to seeing the first Indian American woman as Lieutenant Governor on the ballot this fall,” he added.
