Pramila Jayapal, the first Indian-American woman to serve in the US House of Representatives, has endorsed Democratic nominee Joe Biden for the November presidential election.
Tweeting her support to Biden, the Democrat and Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus on Monday wrote, “Today I am announcing my endorsement of @JoeBiden for President of the United States. VP Biden is a deeply dedicated public servant with the ability to unite the American people. I am moved by his compassion and ability to connect with people on the most human level,” she said in the tweet.”
Jayapal, who had earlier endorsed Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, has now lent her support to Biden after Sanders ended his campaign earlier and also endorsed Biden after withdrawing from the presidential race. Through her endorsement of Biden, Jayapal hinted that the progressive wing of the Democratic Party was now behind the former VP for the November elections.
Following up on her first tweet, Jayapal explained the reasons behind her endorsement. She tweeted, “I started this campaign as a vocal and ardent surrogate for Bernie Sanders and while I have not always agreed with Vice President Joe Biden on matters of policy, I’m ready to work with him to craft and then implement the most progressive agenda of any candidate in history.”
She further said that “progress toward a better future requires defeating” President Trump this November, adding that she would do everything she can to help Biden win the elections.
“We are ready for a President who will encourage us to be as big as we can be, with compassion & bold leadership. That President must be @JoeBiden. I will do everything I can to help @JoeBiden win back the White House, take back the Senate, & preserve our House majority,” she added.
Ex-Obama campaign adviser Tommy Vietor described Jayapal’s stand as “a big endorsement” for Biden, adding: “She is brilliant.”
US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also endorsed Biden on Monday. saying he was a “voice of reason and resilience” amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Biden already has the formal support from former President Barack Obama, progressive leaders Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, and the party’s two previous presidential nominees John Kerry and Al Gore.
