Californian Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the appointment of 19 California superior court judges, in which one of them was an Indian American woman.
After the presidential elections were over, with vice-president-elect Kamala Harris set to occupy the White House, Gov. Newson said, “We are working through the cattle call of considerations. I want to make sure it’s inclusive. I want to make sure that we are considerate of people’s points of view.”
Among the 19 lawmakers announced last week, who were on the governor’s list, Indian American Rita L. Badhan was named to serve as the Los Angeles County.
Gov. Newsom also announced the appointment of Manmeet “Mani” Grewal, for the Supervisor for the 4th District of the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors.
Badhan, 43, of Los Angeles, has been appointed to serve as a Judge in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. She has served as a Deputy Public Defender at the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office since 2007.
Earlier she was an Assistant Public Defender at the Sacramento County Public Defender’s Office from 2006 to 2007 and as a Deputy Public Defender at the Santa Clara County Public Defender’s Office from 2004 to 2006. Badhan was a Sole Practitioner in 2004.
She earned a Juris Doctor degree from the Santa Clara University School of Law. She fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Abraham Khan. Badhan is a Democrat.
Grewal, 41, of Modesto, has been appointed Supervisor for the 4th District of the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors.
Grewal has been President of Grewal Re Holdings since 2010 and a Member of the Modesto City Council since 2015. He is a member of the California State University, Stanislaus Foundation Board, the Sutter Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Children’s Crisis Center.
Grewal earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of the Pacific. This position does not require Senate confirmation. Grewal is a Democrat.
Of the 19 California superior court judges besides 10 in LA County, one was in Butte County, one in Orange County, two in Riverside County, two in San Bernardino County, two in San Francisco County and one in Ventura County.
The members of the LA county are: Alicia Y. Blanco, Robert E. Sanchez DuFour, Carla L. Garrett, Ronald O. Kaye, Elizabeth Potter Scully, David W. Swift, Hernan D. Vera, Wendy L. Wilcox and Bryant Y. Yang.
