A man of Indian origin was arrested after driving high on drugs and damaging dozens of vehicles on a wild ride through California, according to authorities.
Satinerjit Singh Bali, 50, of Lathrop, was arrested for allegedly crashing his vehicle into at least 11 other vehicles while driving from Madera to Fresno, according to the California Highway Patrol. Bali was chased down and finally held by victims who had been driving cars he hit until police took him into custody.
Bali faces misdemeanor charges of hit-and-run as well as driving while under the influence of drugs, according to state police.
On June 12 around 8:30 a.m., the CHP received reports of a man hitting other vehicles and continuing to drive on Highway 99. By the time the police were done chasing him in Fresno, at least 11 victims were recorded.
Original reports said Bali had struck 14 vehicles, but that number was later revised down to eleven confirmed victims. Police said they were unaware of injuries to drivers or passengers.
One of the victims, Angelique Milam was seated in the passenger seat of her SUV with her teenage daughter driving the car. She remarked, “It happened so fast.” Milam reported to ABC30 Action News Fresno that they were in the fast lane close to the Avenue 7 exit on State Route 99, when Bali drove his vehicle between their car and another vehicle. “He just went between the lanes and tried to get through us, but there was not enough space so he ended up locking with us, carrying us together,” Milam said.
Police held Bali the required 4 hours before releasing without bail.
