Sonam Wangchuk, an engineer turned education reformer, the man who inspired the Amir Khan’s character in 3 Idiots, called out to Indians to boycott all Chinese products.

Wangchuk’s recent YouTube video is titled, China Ko Jawaab Sena Degi Bullet Se, Naagrik Dengey Wallet Se, which has been taking Indian internet by storm.

In a new video released on Sunday, named China Ko Jawaab, Apke Sawalon Ka Jawaab, as a follow up to the first, he answers the queries and doubts related to the feasibility of boycott call of the Chinese products.

Wangchuk on being asked if boycotting China is not akin to spreading hatred, says the problem is with the expansionist attitude of the Chinese govt which indulges in exploitation, not with the people of China.

He says that it can’t go on as business as usual for China because of its engagements in the exploitation of millions of bonded laborers, it’s killing of Tibetan Buddhists and demolition of temples and Maths, and also reflected towards the suffering of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang.

In the video, he can be seen sitting in Ladakh, in the backdrop of the Himalayas and the river Sindhu. He starts by talking about the increasing tensions at the border between India and China and stresses the responsibility of Indian citizens to boycott made in China products.

In the video, he mentions that China is escalating tensions not just with India, but Taiwan, Vietnam, and Hong Kong as well, in order to not have its own citizens rebel and express displeasure against the government.

He pointed out the “debt-trap diplomacy” of China in Sri Lanka and how the Hambantota port is almost sold to the Chinese industries. “Pakistan is trapped in so much debt that it will become a slave of the Chinese regime,” he added.

Wangchuk also alleges that Chinese forces have intruded many miles into the Ladakh boundaries since the 1962 Sino-Indo War. “The herdsman in Ladakh have lost their grassland, where will they take their sheep and goats?” asks Wangchuck.

A prominent traders association The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) on Sunday expressed support with Wangchuk’s appeal to boycott Chinese goods.

CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal said it will educate traders across the country to stop importing as well as selling these products, and more products will soon be verified and added to the list.

Meanwhile, several Bollywood celebrities have also joined the movement. Milind Soman made headlines for uninstalling the Chinese app TikTok. Now, Amrita Rao also joined in the movement. The actor announced on Twitter that she had just deleted her TikTok account.

Wangchuk compared the Chinese goods boycott call to the Swadeshi Movement of 1905, promoted by freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Furthermore, he suggested that the movement be citizen-driven — “Citizens have the option to rule out the products because customers are the king, and no-one will have the authority to ask any questions to the consumers.”
