Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and her husband, Douglas Emhoff, visited the DC Central Kitchen and thanked the staff and volunteers at the community kitchen in the national capital for their hard work during this Thanksgiving season to feed those who are hungry.
“Hurting families must be made a priority and given the relief they deserve,” Harris posted on Facebook.
“Food banks across our nation are struggling to keep up with the demand due to COVID-19. Know that when @JoeBiden and I are in the White House, we’ll fight food insecurity and address this crisis. No one should go hungry in America.”
During the DC kitchen visit, Harris took a few questions and was asked if she had spoken to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
“I can’t speak directly to that but I will tell you that it has been the priority for the President-elect and me from the beginning that we intend to and will work across the aisle to deal with these most intractable issues that are affecting people regardless of who they voted for in the election,” Harris said.
“And I can tell you that the President-elect and I take that very seriously,” she added. “And I’m here to talk with folks who are feeding the hungry. You may have heard me say one in six families in America is describing their children as being hungry. One in five are describing an inability to pay rent. These are real issues and the folks that we are talking about whoever they voted for deserve to have leadership that sees them through the lens of the life they’re living, regardless of the price negotiation and we feel very strongly about that.”
She was also asked whether she had spoken to Vice President Mike Pence and California Governor Newsom about a replacement for her US Senate seat.
Harris replied: “Not yet.”
Who Newsom will appoint has become a hot topic in the media, as several names have been surfacing from the Indian-American, Latino-American and African-American communities.
Before leaving from the DC Central Kitchen, Harris also talked to a few fans who had been waiting to see her. She stood at a distance and thanked them. She said she loves to cook.
Harris, 56, shared her favorite Thanksgiving recipe on social media, with a photograph of “Kamala’s Cornbread Dressing.”
She instructed that one needs packages of cornbread mix, spicy pork sausages, onions, apples, celery stalks, chicken broth, unsalted butter, fresh parsley, sage, thyme,
rosemary, salt and pepper to make Kamala’s Cornbread Dressing.
The caption of the post read: “During difficult times I have always turned to cooking. This year, I wanted to share one of my family’s favorite Thanksgiving recipes with you. I hope whenever you’re able to make it in life, it brings you as much warmth as it has brought me — even when separated from those I love”
The recipe had garnered hundreds of thousands of “likes” along with a ton of compliments.

“Omggggg yesssss always apples in the stuffing,” one user wrote. Another added: “KAMALA COMING THROUGH WITH THE CORNBREAD YUPPPP.” A third said: “Ooh definitely gonna try! Thank you, Mrs. Vice President, elect.”
Before the November 3 presidential election, Kamala Harris had delighted fans by teaming up with actress Mindy Kaling to whip up some dosas.
Back in 2018, Harris had revealed that no Thanksgiving meal for her family was complete without her cornbread dressing. She has previously also shared some tips for cooking the perfect turkey meal.
Speaking about her favorite Indian dishes, Harris has listed idli with a “really good sambar,” and “any kind of tikka.”
