Sampat Shivangi, physician and philanthropist from Mississippi and a leading Indian American member of the Republican Party, was appointed to the Mental Health Services National Advisory Council earlier this week.
Dr Shivangi’s appointment was announced by the White House and by the US secretary of health and human services, Alex Azar.
Dr Shivangi, who chairs the Mississippi State Board of Mental Health, will be part of the Mental Health Services National Advisory Council till July 30, 2023.
“Having served on the Mississippi State Board of Mental Health for more than a decade as vice-chair and chair, this is a unique honor for me to serve on the National Advisory Council and I look forward to serve the nation with my best of abilities,” he said in a statement.
“I definitely wish to thank President Donald Trump and Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex M Azar II for their consideration and the opportunity to serve.”
Dr Shivangi is a lifelong member of the Republican Party in Mississippi. He is also national president of the Indian American Forum for Political Education.
For the past three decades, Dr Shivangi has advocated for bills in Congress on behalf of India through his close relationships with US senators and members of Congress.
He is a founding member of the Republican Indian Council and the Republican Indian National Council.
