Medical student of Indian origin dies in car gas leak in Chicago

A 22-year-old girl, Shaik Zaheera Naaz, from Andhra Pradesh, a postgraduate student of physiotherapy died in a bizarre incident in the US. Naaz, who was doing MS in physiotherapy, died in Chicago due to a gas leak in a car in which she was traveling.

According to information received by her family at Prasadampadu on the outskirts of Vijayawada, she fell unconscious along with the car driver due to the gas leak. She was shifted to a hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. The incident occurred on Wednesday, December 20.

After completing her degree in physiotherapy at a college in Vijayawada, Naaz moved to Chicago in August 2023. MS. Zaheera’s mother Sk Jameela worked as a tailor to educate her two daughters after her husband passed away.

“Zaheera was a meritorious student. She studied hard and also worked as a tutor to earn money for her medical education. She wanted to become a reputed physiotherapist and had decided to complete her master’s degree in the US. We supported her and hoped to see her achieve her dream. But our hopes were shattered by the tragic incident,” said Naaz’s uncle, Sk Saleem.

The family members have decided to complete the last rites in the US. “It is mandatory to complete an autopsy in the US if we wish to bring her body to India. That’s against our religious practices. Authorities said that it would take at least 20 days for the entire process, and we have decided to bury her in the US,” said Jameela.
