Indian American Sanjay Mehrotra, the CEO of Micron Technology has promised to invest $100 billion over the next 20 years which will be instrumental in the creation of thousands of jobs in New York.
In his LinkedIn post, Mehrotra said that he met President Joe Biden on October 28 and showcased Micron’s future plans and the creation of the largest semiconductor fabrication facility in Clay, New York.
“I was humbled to meet with President Biden, introduce him to some of the Micron team, and showcase Micron’s plans for our future megafab in Clay, New York. This $100B investment over the next two decades will create the largest #semiconductor fabrication facility in the history of the United States,” Mehrotra claimed in his LinkedIn post. We are proud to drive a vision for high-tech manufacturing leadership here in America, and we’re thankful to President Biden, Senators Schumer and Gillibrand, and Governor Hochul for supporting that vision.”
Mehrotra is the president and CEO of Micron Technology, an iconic memory, and storage company with a long history of innovation and creative technology breakthroughs. He is also the co-founder and former CEO of SanDisk, the company that helped popularize flash storage.
His early experience as a semiconductor design engineer helped shape and refine the management philosophy he exemplifies now. He says that the most effective leaders pay attention to the details and inspire their teams to set aggressive goals, pursue them tenaciously, and celebrate success with an eye on what’s next.
“As a leader, I seek to exemplify integrity and accountability. I believe success comes most quickly to diverse teams with a strong and unified culture. I strive to foster that diversity and engagement at Micron and am proud to be leading Micron’s global team of more than 44,000. I am energized every day by our people and the tremendous opportunities I see for our solutions to help transform the world around us through disruptive technologies like artificial intelligence, 5G networks, and intelligent edge devices,” Mehrotra says in his LinkedIn profile.
Prior to SanDisk, he held design engineering positions at Integrated Device Technology, Inc., SEEQ Technology, and Intel Corporation. Mehrotra was born in Kanpur and completed his education at Delhi’s Sardar Patel Vidyalaya. When he was 18 Mehrotra moved to the US and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Berkeley. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from Boise State University, and holds around 70 patents.
After his meeting with Biden, Mehrotra assured that over time, this investment will create 50,000 jobs in New York. “We are eager to partner with local colleges, universities, and community organizations to begin building the workforce of the future here. With the help of the CHIPS & Science Act, we will make the US, and New York specifically, a hub for leading-edge semiconductor #manufacturing,” he said.
These fabs will be a critical part of Micron’s manufacturing network, creating memory chips to be used in the most demanding applications worldwide. “Clay, New York will be able to say with pride that they are home to some of the most advanced semiconductor facilities anywhere in the world,” he added.
Micron Technology is a Nasdaq-listed company that focuses on innovative memory and storage solutions. The company proposes to invest $250 million in the Green CHIPS Community Investment Fund, with an additional $100 million investment from New York, with $150 million from local, other states, and national partners.
“With @MicronTech & federal & local partners, we’re investing $500 million in Central New York for workforce development, housing, education & more. Thanks to our Green CHIPS legislation, we’ll not only bring 50,000 jobs, we’ll make long-term investments in our communities,” tweeted New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
