Modi puppet drives down 5th Avenue looking to “shoot someone”

iNDICA NEWS BUREAU-

On 5th Avenue, a giant puppet resembling Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi rode in a convertible, brandishing a banner with a provocative message: “I could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and get away with it, OK?” The stunt was a symbol of protest and appeal for global attention by the Hindus for Human Rights and a host of other Hindu, Sikh, and Muslim diaspora organizations in the US.

These groups came together in a show of unity and strength to highlight the alleged strategy of the Indian government in assassinating and intimidating US citizens of Indian descent, as well as other activists living abroad.

In June Indian authorities allegedly tried to assassinate a US citizen in New York, at the same time as they were accused of being involved in the killing of a high-profile Canadian Sikh activist. The developments had the FBI worried enough to warn multiple Californian activists of similar threats. There is a clear pattern, US prosecutors have noted.

“The point we make is deadly serious,” said Sunita Viswarath of Hindus for Human Rights, “American lives are not chips in trade deals. Biden needs to let Americans — and Modi — know that our lives matter, and are protected.”

Hindus for Human Rights is an organization dedicated to promoting human rights, social justice, and pluralism within the Hindu community and beyond. The outfit strives to uphold the core values of Hinduism, advocating for the rights of marginalized communities and fostering dialogue to address critical issues affecting society.

“The questions we ask ourselves are who is next and what will it take for our government to step up?” said Safa Ahmed of Indian American Muslim Council. “America needs to stand up for its own people, India’s people, and democracy itself.”

“The event in NYC was not just a visual spectacle, it was a powerful and symbolic act of protest and a call for urgent action. It reminds us of the critical role of democratic nations in safeguarding the rights and lives of individuals, regardless of their nationality or location. The Biden administration, along with the global community, faces a crucial test in responding to these allegations and taking concrete steps to ensure the safety and rights of diaspora communities,” Hindus for Human Rights said in a statement. “In the wake of this demonstration, we are left with pressing questions: How will the global community respond to these alleged acts of cross-border violence? What measures will be taken to protect the vulnerable and hold perpetrators accountable? The answers to these questions will shape the future of international relations, human rights, and the very essence of democratic values.”
