Modi to visit White House next week

iNDICA NEWS BUREAU-

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the White House next week following an invitation from President Donald Trump, Reuters reported.

The announcement comes shortly after a phone call on January 27, where both leaders emphasized their commitment to strengthening the U.S.-India strategic partnership and enhancing cooperation within the Indo-Pacific Quad framework.

During the call, Trump highlighted the importance of India purchasing more American-made security equipment and fostering a fairer bilateral trade relationship. The leaders also discussed a wide range of regional issues, including security in the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe.

In addition to discussing trade and security, the two leaders also touched upon the upcoming visit, underscoring the strong ties between their countries. The US and India share a significant trade relationship, with bilateral trade exceeding USD 118 billion in 2023-24, and India posting a trade surplus of USD 32 billion.

The visit also marks a key moment in their ongoing collaboration, as India will host the Quad Leaders for the first time later this year. Modi and Trump have shared a warm relationship over the years, with the two leaders working closely on various global issues.

The timing of the visit comes just hours after a US military plane departed with deported migrants to India, marking the farthest such flight under the Trump administration. India is also eager to address potential tariffs that Trump has previously threatened, particularly regarding India’s high tariffs on US products.

With the visit on the horizon, the two leaders are expected to discuss how to further deepen cooperation in trade, security, and regional issues, strengthening the already solid US-India strategic partnership.
