A shocking incident unfolded in Carteret, New Jersey when an Indian-origin man opened fire on two women from Punjab, India. The shooting took place outside a residence on Roosevelt Avenue, resulting in one fatality and leaving another victim critically injured on Wednesday, June 12.
The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Gaurav Gill, was promptly apprehended by local law enforcement and now faces murder charges. The victims were identified as Jasvir Kaur and Gagandeep Kaur by the Consulate General of India in New York.
Following the attack, both women were airlifted to a nearby hospital. Tragically, Jasvir Kaur succumbed to her injuries, while Gagandeep Kaur remains in critical condition. The Consulate General of India in New York expressed deep sorrow over the incident in a statement posted on their official X (formerly Twitter) account.
“Deeply saddened to learn of the tragic demise of Ms. Jasvir Kaur and injuries to Ms. Gagandeep Kaur in a shooting on Roosevelt Av, Carteret, New Jersey. We offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased,” the statement read.
As of now, law enforcement officials have not disclosed any information regarding the possible motive behind the shooting or any potential connection between the suspect and the victims. The investigation is ongoing, with the Consulate General of India in New York maintaining close contact with RWJ Barnabas Health and Carteret Police Department to follow up on the case.
This incident comes on the heels of another tragic event involving the Indian-American community in New York last week. In that case, an Indian-origin man, identified as Karamjit Multani (33), allegedly shot and killed his brother Vipanpal (27) and injured his 52-year-old mother in the Richmond Hill area. Richmond Hill is known for its significant Indian and Caribbean population, comprising approximately 26 percent of the residents.
These back-to-back incidents have sent shockwaves through the Indian-American community, raising concerns about safety and prompting calls for increased awareness and preventive measures.
