The New York Police Department is yet to make any arrests in the murder of a 31-year-old man of Indian origin identified as Satnam Singh.
Singh was found dead while sitting in a parked SUV down the street from home in Queens South Ozone Park section with gunshot wounds in his neck and torso, Saturday.
According to a statement by the New York Police Department, the shootout was caught in a neighbor’s CCTV camera and the footage was being reviewed.
Singh was sitting in the black Jeep Wrangler Sahara borrowed from a friend when a gunman approached and opened fire.
There are conflicting reports on whether the gunman had approached Singh on foot or in a silver-colored sedan with a black trunk as it drove past the jeep.
“(Singh) was walking up 129th St going to the car and the other car with the perp in it came up,” said neighbour Joan Cappellani, whose CCTV footage has been seized by the cops.
Singh was rushed from the scene to Jamaica Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
In neighboring Richmond Hill, two Sikh men were assaulted in what the police had classified as hate crimes, this April. Both South Ozone Park and Richmond Hill are home to large number of people of Indian origin. Two perpetrators were arrested in connection with the assaults.
Detectives were trying to determine if the gunman was aiming at Singh or was hoping to kill the SUV’s owner and was unaware who was inside.
Singh’s murder comes days after another Indian national Sai Charam succumbed to an apparent gunshot wound with which he was found inside his SUV in Baltimore, Maryland.
