Nobel prize winner, Abhijit Banerjee, on Saturday offered to help the government of West Bengal to spread awareness about the COVID-19 pandemic, through social media platforms. Reportedly, Banerjee had a telephonic conversation with the Chief Minister of the state Mamta Banerjee, during which he extended his helping hand to fight the outbreak of the virus in the West Bengal.
So far Bengal has reported 18 positive cases and 1 death due to coronavirus.
“There is so much to do. We want to work with them (state government) on effective social messaging,” he told PTI, when asked how he would want to go about it, reported Business Standard on Saturday.
In October 2018, Indian-American economist Banerjee, his wife Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer jointly won the Nobel “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.”
In 2019, the CM of Bengal had met with the Nobel laureate’s mother Nirmala Banerjee, and took to Twitter to express her joy.
“Yesterday, I spent time with the family of our very own Nobel Prize-winning economist, Abhijit Banerjee. His contribution to the experimental theory of poverty alleviation will go a long way in helping people #Bangla is very proud of him!,” Banerjee tweeted.
On the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17, 2019, Banerjee in a tweeted”…our Govt in #Bangla is committed to alleviating poverty, reducing unemployment, combating illiteracy and upholding human rights.”
Banerjee had said the West Bengal government may seek help from the Noble prize winner and his mother in various projects of different departments like agriculture, health, rural development and woman and child welfare as well as education, adding that the Nobel laureate’s theory will go a long way in helping the poor.
