Former Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan has advised that India should leverage its G20 presidency to seek greater openness towards service exports. COP29’s Baku finance goal triples climate finance target, draws mixed reactions from developing nations

Despite objections by developing nations, including India, expressing dissatisfaction with the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) owing to its “paltry size”, the COP29 Presidency of Azerbaijan on Saturday, November 23, announced the agreement of the Baku Finance Goal, a new commitment to channel $1.3 trillion of climate finance to the developing world by 2035 in significant uplift.

This includes a new core finance goal of $300 billion that triples the previous $100 billion target. There were breakthroughs in the Baku Finance Goal and UN carbon markets too.

India’s EAM Jaishankar highlights strong bonds with Global South countries

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday, October 26, stated that the countries from the Global South have a “high degree” of trust and expectations from India. 

Addressing an interactive session with students at FLAME University in Pune on Saturday, Jaishankar said, “What do we mean by the Global South? We largely mean countries that were colonized, who got their independence or who are still developing, who would be largely low-income countries… They have a high degree of trust and expectation in India and with a reason.”

India called on Wednesday, September 25, for urgent reforms of the international decision-making structures, especially the Security Council, to give the Global South its due representation.

Speaking at the Foreign Ministers’ meeting of the G20, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said reforming the UN to ensure it was representative, credible, and effective was imperative and urgent.

PM Modi, India’s voice is key in global diplomacy: UN Spokesperson

Praising Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s global stature, Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, said that the lawmaker, as well as his country’s voice in diplomacy, is a loud and important one.
