Canadian journalist criticizes government’s inaction on rising extremism amid diplomatic tensions with India

Canadian journalist Daniel Bordman has criticized his country’s government for failing to curb rising extremism, warning that the “tacit support of extremism from the highest levels of government is starting to have consequences”.

In view of the escalating diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, Bordman highlighted the challenges faced not only by Indian diplomats but also by various minority communities within Canada.

White House officials meet Sikh activists before Biden-Modi meet

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emplaned for the U.S. for his three-day official visit to the country. Just hours before Modi’s arrival on September 21, officials from the White House have met a group of Sikh activists. As per reports, citing a community leader, the officers assured the Sikh group that the government is committed to protecting American citizens from any acts of transnational aggression on its soil.

The meeting, initiated by the White House, was held inside the complex on Thursday, September 19. It was attended by American Sikh Caucus Committee founder Pritpal Singh and representatives from the Sikh Coalition and Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF).

India dismisses Pannun’s lawsuit over ‘assassination’ attempt in U.S. as ‘unwarranted’

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday, September 19, dismissed the lawsuit filed by pro-Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun as “unwarranted and unsubstantiated” over the ‘assassination’ attempt against the Indian government in the U.S.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that it doesn’t change India’s views about the underlying situation, now that the case has been lodged.

The Indian Consulate in New York has condemned the vandalism of the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple, saying it has raised the matter with the U.S. law enforcement authorities for prompt action against perpetrators of the “heinous act”.

“The vandalism of the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Melville, New York, is unacceptable,” the Indian Consulate said Monday, September 16, in a post on X.

India’s High Commissioner in Canada Sanjay Kumar Verma said national security threats originating from Canada are a red line for India. “My concern is national security threats emanating from the land of Canada. These threats are largely emanating from Canadian sections,” he said, adding that the two sides are engaged to resolve the differences. “We are ready to sit down at the table any day and we are doing that and we are trying to resolve this issue,” he said.
