Congress rose against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) with Satyagraha for Unity’ at Delhi’s Rajghat — a memorial of Mahatma Gandhi — organized by top Congress leadership, led by party chief Sonia Gandhi on December 23. Former party chief, Rahul Gandhi who also joined the protest on Monday attacked the BJP saying that they could not provide jobs and destroyed the economy. He also accused PM Narendra Modi of spreading hate and trying to break the country.
“You could not provide jobs and destroyed the economy, which was our strength, and that is why you are hiding behind hate. The country will not let you attack the Constitution, suppress the voice of ‘Bharat Mata’,” Rahul Gandhi said at Rajghat, reported India Today.
The leaders, including former prime minister Manmohan Singh, and general secretary of Congress Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, participated in the “Satyagraha”, which was also meant to express solidarity with the youth and students protesting against the amended Citizenship Act and the proposed countrywide NRC as well as against the police “atrocities” on them.
Congress leader P Chidambaram also appealed to all opposition parties to unite, stating that Jharkhand poll results have shown that BJP was not unbeatable, reported Business Standard. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote to chief ministers and senior leaders belonging to opposition parties urging them to unite and chalk out a plan to “save the country”.
As many as 10 non-BJP chief ministers, including Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy have announced they will not implement NRC in their respective states.
