PM Narendra Modi takes stock as massive fire kills 40 Indians in Kuwait

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted a high-level meeting to review the situation in Kuwait, where a massive blaze killed 40 Indian nationals.

Modi announced a compensation package of INR 2 lakh (USD 2,394) each for the families of the deceased. He also extended condolences to the bereaved families while wishing a speedy recovery to those injured. As per reports, the fire broke out in a building housing workers in Kuwait’s Mangaf city at 6 am local time on Wednesday (June 12).

It has already accounted for the death of 49 people, while another 50 people sustained wounds.

Reports said that Kirti Vardhan Singh, MoS, Ministry of External Affairs, has been sent to Kuwait by PM Modi to expedite repatriation of mortal remains and medical assistance to those injured.

Taking to social media, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said he spoke to his Kuwaiti counterpart Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya, who assured him of a thorough investigation. The Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, has already ordered an investigation and said those found responsible for the blaze would face punishment.

Apart from Indians, people from Pakistan, Egypt, Nepal and the Philippines also died in the tragedy.
