Ravi Zacharias – a well-known Indian-origin apologist passed away on May 19th at his home in Atlanta, following a brief battle with sarcoma. He was 74 years old at the time of his death.
A popular author and a Christian teacher, he was known for his work through Ravi Zacharias International Ministries (RZIM), which focused on apologetic arguments for the existence of God and the reasonableness of Christianity.
He rose to prominence as a defender of the “intellectual credibility” of Christianity, the ministry said.
According to the RZIM website, Zacharias preached in more than 70 countries and authored more than 30 books in his 48-year career. His primary mission was to “help the thinker believe and the believer think,” it said.
He was key figure is teaching Christians to engage with sceptics and arguing that the Christian worldview had robust answers for humanity’s existential questions.
Ironically, it all began when he attempted suicide by poison at age 17. That’s when a minister visited him in the hospital and gave him a Bible. After hearing John 14:19, where Jesus said, “Because I live, you also will live,” this changed his life forever, and rest is history.
Ravi Zacharias was born in Chennai in 1946, and he is survived by his wife of 48 years, Margie Zacharias along with three children and several grandchildren.
