iNDICA NEWS BUREAU-
Rekha Gupta, a grassroots leader deeply rooted in BJP ideology, will be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Delhi on Thursday, marking a historic moment for both her and her party, as it forms a government in Delhi for the first time in nearly 27 years.
Having risen through the ranks of the BJP, Rekha Gupta brings a wealth of experience in understanding the issues and challenges facing Delhi.
She has served in various organizational capacities and as a councillor, making her well-acquainted with the needs of the national capital. With the BJP’s election manifesto promising significant changes, Gupta is expected to take a hands-on approach and implement her party’s promises promptly.
Rekha Gupta will become the fourth woman to hold the post of Delhi Chief Minister, continuing a tradition of female leadership in the city, which has seen women CM’s from BJP, Congress, and AAP. She will succeed Atishi, who held the position before her. Elected as an MLA from the Shalimar Bagh seat, Gupta has previously served as the general secretary of the BJP Mahila Morcha in Delhi and was a member of its national executive committee. In these roles, she spearheaded numerous campaigns for the welfare of marginalized communities, particularly women.
Her political journey began with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and later, she became the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in 1996-97. Gupta’s focus on student issues continued through her tenure as a councillor from North Pitampura, where she worked to improve basic infrastructure like libraries and parks. She also holds an LLB and is the founder of AAS, a non-governmental organization. Despite a setback in 2023 when she lost the mayoral election to AAP’s Shelly Oberoi, she continued her political ascent.
At 50, Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA, was selected over more senior Delhi BJP leaders, with the party seeking a woman leader to take the helm. Her elevation follows days of speculation about who would lead the party in Delhi after the February 8 assembly poll results.
BJP’s focus on women empowerment is underscored by Gupta’s appointment, marking her as the party’s only female Chief Minister. As the new leader of the BJP legislative party, Gupta expressed her gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the party leadership, and the people of Delhi for the trust they have placed in her.
“I express my heartfelt gratitude to the top leadership for trusting me and entrusting me with the responsibility of the post of Chief Minister. This trust and support have given me new energy and inspiration. I pledge that I will work with full honesty, integrity and dedication for the welfare, empowerment and overall development of every citizen of Delhi. I am fully committed to this important opportunity to take Delhi to new heights,” she said.
Gupta emphasized that her main aim is to fulfill the promises made to the people and work in a time-bound manner under PM Modi’s leadership. She also expressed her determination to lead the government with honesty, integrity, and dedication for the welfare and development of every citizen of Delhi.
The BJP won 48 seats in a historic mandate, ousting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) from power. Rekha Gupta will take the oath as Chief Minister at a ceremony at Ramlila Maidan, marking a new era for Delhi’s governance.
