It’s been 20 years since the WTC incident. The attacks on the eleventh of September, 2001 put into motion a long chain of events that have shaped the concepts of security and terrorism, the world over.
However, everything seems to be more or less the same as ever, as it seems we have come a full circle to where it all began. The world continues to talk about the US and Afghanistan almost in the same context.
Thousands of American lives were lost and the last 20 years of US invasion of Afghanistan looked like a loud back answer to Afghanistan.
A moment of silence was observed on Saturday, 11, at a memorial in Lower Manhattan to mark the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attack, which left nearly 3,000 people dead.
US President Joe Biden was joined by former President Barack Obama and Bill Clinton in Lower Manhattan for the ceremony at the National September 11th Memorial, CNN reported.
Family members of the victims read the names of all their relatives at the National September 11th Memorial to honor them.
“Twenty years ago, nearly 3,000 lives were cut short by an unspeakable act of cowardice and hatred on 9/11. As a nation, we must never forget those we lost during one of the darkest moments in our history and the enduring pain of their families and loved ones,” Biden tweeted.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that it was an attack on humanity and such tragedies can only be avoided by inculcating human values. “Today is September 11th i.e. 9/11! A date in the history of the world that is known to have struck humanity,” he said.
Biden posted a video message on Twitter saying, “To the families of 2,977 people from more than 90 nations killed on September 11, 2001, in New York City, Arlington, Virginia and Shanksville, Pennsylvania and a thousand more who were injured. America commemorates you and your loved ones,”
He also said this tragedy highlights how even at our most vulnerable, unity is our greatest strength.
“Unity doesn’t mean we have to believe the same thing, but we must have a fundamental respect and faith in each other and in this nation,” Biden says in his video remarks.
“We honor the firefighters, police officers, EMTs and construction workers, doctors and nurses, faith leaders, service members, and all of the everybody people who gave their all to rescue, recover and rebuild,” he added.
Sharing the pain that comes with memories of 9/11, saying, “No matter how much time has passed, these commemorations bring everything painfully back as if you just got the news a few seconds ago.”
In the nearly 3000 lives that were lost, there were many South Asians who were in the Twin Towers and had died in the attacks and we at indica News are here to remember them and honor them.
