‘An immigrant, mother, and a woman of color’ is how Sumiti Mehta describes herself on her personal website. She recently became the first Indian-origin woman to be elected to Natomas Unified School District Board of Trustees in Sacramento, California.
According to the official notice, Mehta was appointed to the board on December 13.
“Congratulations to new Trustee Sumiti Mehta and re-elected Trustees Micah Grant and Erika Harden for being selected to serve the Natomas Unified School community for the next four years,” the board stated.
“Trustee Mehta made history by being the first Southeast Asian woman elected to the Natomas Unified School District Board of Trustees and the first Indian woman to be elected for an elected position in the City of Sacramento. Senator Angelique Ashby swore her in. Trustee Grant was re-elected for a third term and was sworn in by NUSD Trustee Scott Dosick. Trustee Harden was re-elected for a second term and was sworn in by Mayor Pro-Tem Karina Talamantes,” the notification added.
According to reports, Mehta moved to the United States with her husband in 2007. “Since 2009, I have worked closely with Natomas schools, collaborating with district administration, teachers, classified employees and parents to support our most disadvantaged students,” stated the About Me section on www.sumiti4natomas.com.
