Ashwin Ramaswami, a trailblazing Gen-Z Indian-American candidate, has received a high-profile endorsement from U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff in his bid for the Georgia State Senate. Ramaswami is vying for the seat in District 48, challenging incumbent Republican State Senator Shawn Still, a known associate of former President Donald Trump.
Senator Ossoff, a Democrat who has represented Georgia in the U.S. Senate since 2021, praised Ramaswami’s potential, stating, “Ashwin Ramaswami would be a tireless advocate for democracy and his constituents in the Georgia State Senate.” Ossoff’s endorsement carries significant weight, given his prominence in Georgia politics and his background in investigative journalism and documentary filmmaking.
The race has garnered attention due to the stark contrast between the candidates. Ramaswami, a former election security expert, is positioning himself as a champion of democratic values and electoral integrity. His opponent, Senator Still, faces legal challenges related to the January 6, 2021, events at the U.S. Capitol, having been indicted alongside former President Trump.
Ramaswami’s campaign has shown impressive momentum, with over $280,000 raised through grassroots efforts, outpacing his opponent’s fundraising. His platform focuses on key issues such as healthcare, housing, and election security, reflecting a progressive agenda to counter far-right influences in state politics.
Ramaswami recently graduated from Georgetown University and previously worked in election security at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). If elected, he would make history as Georgia’s youngest elected representative and the first Indian-American to hold this position in the state legislature. Additionally, he would be the only Georgia state legislator with computer science and law degrees.
Ramaswami’s candidacy is particularly significant for the Indian-American community and Generation Z. Born to parents who immigrated from Tamil Nadu, India, in 1990, he represents the aspirations of a new generation of Americans seeking political engagement and representation.
