Sewa International has donated $10,000 towards flood relief in Pakistan and started a fundraiser to provide groceries and other supplies to 5,000 affected families for at least a month.
According to media reports, torrential rains have caused massive flooding in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Baluchistan, and Southern Sindh provinces since mid-June, affecting over 33 million people and killing nearly 1,100 people, including 348 children.
“Pakistan is dealing with a calamity owing to extreme weather conditions. Sewa’s partner organizations on the ground in Pakistan distributed grocery and essential kits to 200 families on August 30. These kits contain rice, wheat flour, cooking oil, pulses, tea and vegetables, and other hygiene supplies in flood-affected areas. We request people to donate generously for this cause,” Sewa’s vice president for disaster relief, Swadesh Katoch, said.
Bags of potatoes and other items are being prepared in a Sewa facility in Pakistan for distribution among those hit by the floods.
“The floods have wiped out entire villages and destroyed over 300,000 homes. Incessant rains and flash floods have washed roads away, making transportation impossible. Floods have also destroyed electric lines causing severe power outages in several towns and villages,” Swadesh Katoch said.
“As per reports we have been receiving from our volunteers, people have been taking shelter on the roadsides. According to Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Agency, property damage due to the floods have crossed over $10 billion. Sewa International helped Pakistan during the last floods in Sindh province, and we are committed to helping as many Pakistani citizens as possible,” Katoch said.
