President Joe Biden launched a scathing attack against his November presidential election rival Donald Trump, mentioning the 2021 Capitol riot, and said he will not bow down to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. In his State of the Union address, Biden denounced Trump for his recent comments about Russia and NATO.
Stepping up his attack against his predecessor, Biden said that the latter want to spread resentment in the US but will find no harbour in this country. He said the Republican was “bowing down” to Vladimir Putin but “I will not bow down.” He talked about a wide range of issues including Ukraine and NATO, the economy, abortion rights and the US-Mexico border.
The President said that if re-elected, he would work to restore abortion rights nationwide. On the war in Gaza, Joe Biden said it is the fundamental responsibility of Israel to protect innocent civilians. Biden criticized Hamas and asked the group to release the hostages in Gaza. His speech drew applause and criticism too.
Trump, in a post on his Truth Social media platform, said State of the Union contained “tremendous misrepresentation and lies” and “people know it.” Trump said that the people of the country know that November 5 will be the most important day in our nation’s history.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer praised Biden’s address for laying out “a bold vision” for the future. “What the American people heard tonight was a leader who spoke directly to them, acknowledging their needs and shared in their hopes for the future, reminding us why America is a beacon of hope to the rest of the world and the work that must be done to maintain that status,” he said in a statement. “President Biden laid out a bold vision to the American people that shows Democrats are working for a safe, stable, strong America – one that prioritizes the needs of working families and leaves no one behind.”
Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Ben Cardin said he hoped that Biden’s focus on Ukraine would lead to the passage of supplemental funding for Kyiv. “When he raised that at the beginning, I’m sitting in the front of the chamber where the Senators sit, and I saw a lot of Republican senators stand to their feet and say, ‘Yea, let’s do this,’” Cardin recounted. “It was one of the areas where there was strong bipartisan reaction from the members of Congress. It’s our belief that the support is there to pass the supplemental if Speaker Johnson will only let it be voted upon,” Cardin said.
Texas Republican Monica De La Cruz said, “President Biden tried to say everything is perfect, but we know that is not true.”
Rejecting arguments that the President was too political with his speech, Joe Biden’s ally Delaware Senator Chris Coons said that he was Joe Biden was simply making his case for re-election. Biden displayed energy, hopefulness, and positivity in the speech, Coons said.
