Indian ended their ICC trophy drought, winning the T20 World Cup at the Kensington Oval in Barbados by beating South Africa by seven runs.
Chasing 177 runs, South Africa were stopped at 169 runs for the loss of eight wickets, as Hardik Pandya defended 16 runs.
Earlier in the day, Virat Kohli proved his worth with an inning of 76 runs off 59 balls in the all-important final. Kohli, whose bat remained quiet till the final, chose the right occasion to shine, helping his side reach 176 runs.
Axar Patel and Shivam Dube also came in handy, scoring 47 and 27 runs, respectively. Patel hit the Proteas bowlers for four sixes, as he stitched a partnership of 72 runs with Kohli.
Dube struck three boundaries and a six in his 16-ball stay at the crease.
For South Africa, Keshar Maharaj and Anrich Nortje picked up two wickets each. Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada picked up one wicket each, while Patel was run out by Quinton de Kock.
For India Hardik picked up 3 wickets, while the other pacers, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh picked up two wickets each.
This is India’s second T20 World Cup win, having won the inaugural tournament in 2007. Virat Kohli was adjudged the Player of the Match for his batting exploits. Kohli also announced his retirement from T20 international matches.
