Justice Markandey Katju: Did Pakistan’s loss to England call for an Indian celebration? No!

Justice Markandey Katju says: Many Indians celebrated Pakistan’s defeat by England in the T20 World Cup cricket final on November 13, 2022, as if India had won the Cup. These fools did not understand that India and Pakistan (and Bangladesh) are, in fact, one country, only temporarily divided by the British (the way they divided Ireland, Cyprus, Palestine, etc) by that historical swindle called Partition in 1947, on the basis of the bogus two-nation theory.

Celebrating the genius of Satyajit Ray through one film

To watch any Satyajit Ray movie is to watch his meticulous attention to detail. To watch his 1963 classic Mahanagar on his 102nd birth anniversary today is no different.

There is a way to describe my engagement with Ray films. Both in my mother tongue Gujarati and the language I naturally slip into, Hindi, there is an expression for my condition. मुझे सत्यजीत रे की लत पड़ी है. एक तरह से बीमारी है जिसका सिर्फ एक ही इलाज है. उनकी फ़िल्में देखना. (I am addicted to Satyajit Ray. The only cure to that addiction is to watch his films.)

Is India a nation?

Speaking at Cambridge University in 1880, a high official of the British Raj named Sir John Strachey said  “This is the first and foremost thing to learn about India, that there is not, and never was an India, or even any country of India possessing, according to European ideas, any sort of unity – physical, political, social and religious–no Indian nation, no ‘people of India’, of which we hear so much.”

Justice Katju: How can one be an atheist as well as a bhakt?

I had put up a post on my Facebook page stating that I am an atheist as well as a bhakt of Hanumanji.

Many people commented on it stating that this was a contradiction. How can an atheist be a worshipper?

In fact, there is no contradiction. As an atheist, I do not worship any supernatural beings like God, angels, soul, etc and I regard all religions as superstitions.

Justice Katju: ‘Hindi is already the link language of India’

Justice Katju: A controversy has arisen in India over the decision of the Madhya Pradesh government of teaching in Hindi in medical colleges in the state. In this article, I will not go into the correctness or otherwise of this decision, but will instead discuss the general issue relating to Hindi, particularly in the light of the strong opposition to it in the state of Tamil Nadu.
