Niraj Antani, a Republican running for US Congress, is aggressively projecting his Hindu faith. Bhavini Patel, a Democrat running for Congress, is battling allegations of courting Hindu nationalist donors. And Indian-descent donors are pressing the Biden-Harris campaign for a “Hindu page” in its 2024 campaign manifesto. The “Hindu Vote” appears to have become a factor in US politics.

California State Senator Aisha Wahab: SB 403 simply protects all people from caste discrimination

California State Senator Aisha Wahab (Democrat, 10th District) sprang into the spotlight late last year for becoming the Muslim to be elected to the state law-making body. An Afghan American, Wahab has been in the crosshairs of Hindu advocacy groups the moment she introduced California Bill SB 403 in February 2023, which aimed at ending caste discrimination in the state.

Justice Markandey Katju: On Dr Pervez Hoodbhoy’s superficial understanding

Justice Markandey Katju says: Dr Pervez Hoodbhoy is an eminent scientist of Pakistan, holding a Ph.D in nuclear physics from MIT, USA. He is also a secular activist, and has battled against religious orthodoxy in Pakistan, and has championed freedom of speech and scientific thinking, for which he has made sacrifices. For this he must be praised. With great respect to him, however, it must be said that when he dabbles in topics outside his sphere of physics, he reveals his superficiality and inanity.

India rebuts US report on religious freedom

India on Tuesday rejected the US State Department report on international religious freedom and said it was based on “misinformation and flawed understanding.” According to a statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs, spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, “We are aware of the release of the US State Department 2022 Report on International Religious Freedom. Regrettably, such reports continue to be based on misinformation and flawed understanding.”

California rolls back caste-bias case partially, right-wing Hindus claim victory

California state has dropped its allegations of caste-based bias by two Indian-descent employees of IT giant Cisco but will continue the larger case against the company. California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing had filed this case in 2020 based on a complaint from an unidentified employee of the company making it the first case of caste-based discrimination reported in the US.

Justice Katju: ‘Tipu Sultan is a national hero, not a bigot or villain’

Justice Katju says, “One can understand distortion of the truth by 10, 20, or 30 degrees in furtherance of one’s vested interests, but distorting it by 180 degrees, i.e, making it totally upside down by painting a secular hero as a communal bigot and a villain, really boggles one’s mind. But that is precisely what has been done by some people having vested interests about Tipu and most other Muslim rulers in India.”
