New York City Mayor Eric Adams unveils Gandhi statue outside Hindu temple after 2022 vandalism incidents

New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Indian American State Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar unveiled a new Mahatma Gandhi statue, more than a year after the previous one was vandalized twice outside a Hindu temple in the state. Located in front of Shri Tulsi Mandir on 111th Street in Richmond Hill, the Gandhi statue was knocked over, spray painted with the word “dog”, and battered with a sledgehammer on August 3 and 16, 2022.

Train derails in New York City, 13 injured

At least 13 people were injured after a passenger train derailed in New York City, authorities said. A Long Island Rail Road train was heading toward Hempstead when it derailed east of Jamaica Station at 175th Street and 95th Avenue, in the city’s Queens borough, at around 11.12 a.m. on Thursday, according to a Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) official.

New York City officially declares Diwali as school holiday

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has officially declared Diwali as a school holiday aimed at honoring the city’s South Asian, Indo-Caribbean, Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist communities. On Monday, Mayor Adams made the announcement at City Hall while being flanked by Assemblymember Jenifer Rajkumar, the first Hindu American and first South Asian American woman elected to state office.
