“I did not know what was the Olympics….”: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat opens up about her life after Olympic disqualification

Following the dismissal of her plea for an Olympic medal by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and the announcement of her retirement from wrestling, former Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat opened up on her journey in life, both as a person and an athlete and thanked people who helped her throughout it.

On Wednesday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) released a statement to confirm that, “The application field by Vinesh Phogat on August 7 has been dismissed.” Vinesh was set to face Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the United States for the gold medal on August 7. She was disqualified before the women’s 50kg final after exceeding the 50kg weight limit before the final on August 7.

Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra’s hopes of winning a second successive gold medal, to add to his first from Tokyo in the last edition of the Olympics, failed to materialize, as he settled for the silver on Thursday, August 8.

Chopra came into the final as the favourite, with a throw of of 89.34 mts in the qualifying round. In the final round, he threw the javelin 89.45 mts, his second-best ever. But that did not prove enough for the reigning World Champion and Diamond League winner as Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, his good friend on the circuit, upstaged him by setting the Olympic Record to win the gold medal.

Paris Olympics: India suffers another heartbreak as lifter Mirabai Chanu returns empty handed

A day of heartbreaks has just turned worse for Indian fans as top medal hopeful and silver medallist at the Tokyo Olympics, S. Mirabai Chanu, finished fourth in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting final at Paris Olympics on Wednesday, August 7.

The 2020 Tokyo silver medallist finished with a score of 199 kg after the conclusion of the two phases of the competition. Her personal best is 205 kg which she lifted in the 2020 Asian Championship.

Indian grappler Vinesh Phogat stormed into the final of the 50 kg freestyle event at the Paris Olympics with a resounding 5-0 win by points over Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman in the semifinal Tuesday, August 6. This is the first time an Indian woman wrestler has made it to the final.

Vinesh, thus assured India’s fourth medal in the Paris Olympics, when she will fight USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt in the final at the Champ-de-Mars Arena Mat B Wednesday, August 7.
