Padma awards for two Indian-born mathematicians from US, Canada

Two Indian-born mathematicians in the US and Canada are among the 106 recipients of the prestigious Padma Awards, one of the highest civilian honours of the country, announced on the eve of Republic Day. Indian-American S.R. Srinivasa Varadhan has been honoured with the Padma Vibhushan and Indo-Canadian Sujatha Ramdorai received the Padmi Shri for their stellar contributions in the field of science and engineering.

As world’s fastest-growing economy at 5.8%, India ‘bright spot’: UN economist

As the fastest-growing major economy at a clip of 5.8 per cent this year, India is a “bright spot” when the world economy is expected to grow by only 1.9 per cent, according to the UN’s chief official monitoring the global economy. For next year, the UN is projecting a growth rate of 6.7 per cent, a “very high growth relative to other G20 member countries”, the group of the large developed and emerging economies headed by India, said Hamid Rashid, the Chief of the Global Economic Monitoring Branch, on Wednesday.

India to launch its first intranasal Covid vaccine on Republic Day

On January 26 when India celebrates its Republic Day, Bharat Biotech plans to launch its intranasal Covid-19 vaccine iNCOVACC. Executive chairman of the company, Dr. Krishna Ella, announced before a gathering on Saturday, January 21, that the vaccine manufacturer had already received approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) earlier this month for the nasal vaccine, the first of its kind in India.

Nepal Supreme Courrt orders release of ‘Bikini Killer’ Charles Sobhraj after 19 years in jail

The Supreme Court of Nepal on Wednesday ordered the release of serial killer Charles Sobhraj, who is also known as the ‘bikini killer’ or ‘serpent killer’. Hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by Sobhraj, a joint bench of Justices Sapana Pradhan Malla and Til Prasad Shrestha ordered his release if he need not be jailed for another case, adding that arrangements be made to return the French citizen back to his country within 15 days.
