Just when the world began pushing the COVID-19 aside since there has been some level of stability and management, countries around the world are experiencing an increased affected case, including the US, China, India, and more.
India’s coronavirus tally rose to 3,20,922 cases today (June 14) as it recorded the single-day biggest jump of 11,929 new infections in the last 24 hours and 311 deaths, the Union Health Ministry said this morning.
A total of 9,195 COVID-19 patients have died so far, according to the government. This is the second consecutive day that India has recorded more than 11,000 new infections in one day. The country has jumped two positions since last week to become the fourth worst-hit country by the pandemic after the United States, Brazil and Russia.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday met Home Minister Amit Shah and Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, among other ministers and officials, to review the country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. They discussed the situation in the states and Union Territories, including Delhi, where coronavirus cases have been rising.
Globally, the coronavirus count has crossed the 76 lakh mark. Nearly 4.2 lakh people have died due to the highly infectious illness. The United States – that has logged over 20 lakh patients so far- has the highest number of cases.
In China, Beijing carried out mass testing for the coronavirus on Sunday after a new outbreak in the city that prompted travel warnings across the country amid fears of a resurgence of the disease.
The deadly contagion had been brought largely under control in China through strict lockdowns that were imposed early this year but have since been lifted.
But a fresh cluster linked to a wholesale food market in the capital has sparked widespread alarm and raised the specter of a return to painful restrictions.
The National Health Commission (NHC) reported 57 new infections on Sunday, of which 36 were local transmissions in Beijing, all linked to the Xinfadi market.
In the US, at least 19 states have witnessed a surge in new COVID-19 cases, leading to a pause in the reopening of their economies.
The Washington State Department of Health on Saturday released the latest situation report, which showed COVID-19 transmission continued to increase in eastern Washington by the end of May, with a possible uptick in western Washington as well.
Expressing concerns of a further spread of the virus, Washington Governor Jay Inslee said: “The report estimates cases and deaths will soon increase substantially if COVID-19 continues to spread at current levels. Washingtonians have done the hard work to flatten the curve on COVID-19… But today’s report shows us there is still reason for strong concern in parts of our state.”
With 2,074,082 cases and 115,402 deaths, the US continues with the world’s highest number of COVID-19 infections and fatalities, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
While the world might be keen on reopening, we have to be clear that we have not yet come out of the water with coronavirus. A second wave almost seem inevitable, but we could prevent the spread if as individuals we take more responsibility in following the protocols.
