Trump signs executive order banning transgender athletes from women’s sports

iNDICA NEWS BUREAU-

On Wednesday, February 5, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at preventing transgender athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s sports unless they were assigned female at birth, The New York Times reported.

Trump also announced that federal funding would be withheld from high schools and colleges that fail to comply with the new directive.

“From now on, women’s sports will be only for women,” Trump declared during an address at the White House East Room. “The war on women’s sports is over.”

The executive order, titled ‘Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports’, criticizes educational institutions and athletic organizations that have allowed transgender women to participate in women’s sports. The order claims that “ignoring fundamental biological truths” between the sexes deprives women and girls of fair access to educational opportunities and athletic competition.

“This is demeaning, unfair, and dangerous to women and girls, and denies women and girls the equal opportunity to participate and excel in competitive sports,” the statement read. “Moreover, under Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 (Title IX), educational institutions receiving Federal funds cannot deny women an equal opportunity to participate in sports.”

The order also asserts that ignoring biological differences between the sexes compromises women’s rights, safety, and dignity in competitive sports.

The executive order goes on to state that the U.S. will rescind federal funding from educational programs that limit women’s athletic opportunities, resulting in what the administration describes as the “endangerment, humiliation, and silencing” of women and girls.

This latest directive follows a similar order Trump signed on January 20, which sought to define sex as strictly male or female and required that government policies and IDs reflect this binary categorization. Trump, alongside other conservative politicians, has frequently raised concerns about transgender athletes in women’s sports as part of his platform, particularly during election cycles.

As of now, 25 states have enacted laws that restrict transgender athletes from competing in girls’ sports at the high school and youth levels, according to The New York Times.

Recently, the White House issued another controversial executive order aimed at banning federal funding for medical procedures related to gender transition in minors.

The order expressed concerns over the long-term effects of such procedures, labeling them as “chemical and surgical mutilation” and warning that they may lead to permanent sterilization and lifelong medical complications for children. The administration claims these actions are based on the “radical and false” belief that a child’s sex can be changed through irreversible medical interventions.
